Exclusive Scoop - The Man In Red

It’s all very hush, hush why I’ve been asked to come here today but as I drive down through Brook Meadow Campsite I hear a faint ‘ho ho ho’ echoing across the lake, could it be? Is my super secret interview really going to be THE celeb of the Festive Season?

Download the story to your phone / tablet here to read to your children.

As I approach the idyllic lakeside lodge adorned with fairy lights I can see the fire roaring away through the window and I can hear gentle bells tinkling. I can barely contain myself; there he is, taller even than in my dreams. Father Christmas in his long johns! Well that’s a little unexpected.

I gather myself, having interviewed everyone from Queen to The Queen, I can play this cool. ‘Hey Santa!’ comes barrelling out of me!

I immediately attempt to salvage this by querying why at, what is surely the busiest time of year, he appears to be having rather a lovely holiday, today the misty lake visible from the lodge sets the scene for magic. I realise I have accused Father Christmas, THE Father Christmas, of at best laziness, at worst, abandonment of duty. Luckily he takes it all in his jolly stride. Explaining he needed a break as he has been suffering from a respiratory lung condition linked to ingredients used in magic reindeer dust particularly used back in the 70’s that we now know to be hazardous. He looks svelter than I was expecting, maybe he has taken up some of the more adventurous activities on offer here.

Mr. Claus launches into more about his ‘incredible’, ‘fantastic’ and ‘amazing’ team holding the reins (literally I assume??) at home. Although busy in Lapland at the moment, Mrs Christmas had a peaceful time here too during the summer. I startle, how long has he been sequestered away here then? And how on earth has he remained anonymous? There is nothing faint about his Ho Ho Ho’s this time!

He explains that really, unless he wears red, he manages to avoid detection, because who expects Santa Claus to be fishing in Northamptonshire in July or trundling about on a vintage tractor in a boiler suit! Well, when he puts it that way. Speaking of the suit, I assume that will be making its appearance soon for our photo shoot?

'Oh yes, of course,’ he confirms, ‘although I made rather a mistake in March and after collecting it from the cleaners left it hanging on the wardrobe. Gave Beverley, the wonderful cleaner, quite a start when she came in to do her weekly shovel up after me. I’m a little bit too used to having the elves to work their magic you see. In Beverley came and there my suit was, it is rather unmistakable. Thankfully after liberally dosing her with spiked hot chocolate she has become quite the spy mistress, which is particularly useful when I’m sneaking out in my red suit to get back for board meetings. I had been very tired but the stay at Brook Meadow has made me feel completed rejuvenate. Seeing all the greenery and blue water makes a change from all that snow and ice back home and I know when I put the red suit back on the Christmas spirit will run through my bones and tingle to my toes. I am feeling about ready to brush out my beard and polish my boots, great timing really as Rudolph is bringing the Reindeers over soon for team building before The Big Night. We have to be on top form for the big night you know; we mustn’t miss any chimneys’.

I am almost hesitant to ask, does Rudolph take a lodge too? Again that laugh booms out, this time I join in as even in this magical setting I can’t quite picture a team of reindeer in front of the fire.

‘No, no’ he chortles ‘they stay on the farm next to the barn where I’ve been doing all the renovations on my sleigh and collection of tractors.’ I immediately have to ask what renovations could possibly be needed on a magical sleigh.  Here for the first time he is cagey, ‘that’s a surprise for The Big Night but, if you look hard enough when I fly overhead, you’ll see something very special this year.’ Even promising to go off record doesn’t elicit a clue. There is another question burning inside as I can’t picture Santa in greasy overalls, ‘do you need tools for your sleigh projects?’ Again the laughter! He reassures me that all magical renovations need is fairy dust, Christmas spirit and imagination. I feel reassured that Santa isn’t stepping outside my image of him until he starts to describe his pride and joy, a collection of tractors through the ages. I guess even Father Christmas needs a hobby!

It’s time to wrap up our interview now, but I have one last question. What do you love so much about here that made you stay for such a long time? With no pause for thought Kris Cringle launches into an array of the walks and views he has had, the activities and adventures he has got up to and the warm welcome he has received from everyone. Quite the Good Area Guide he has become. He also plans to visit Clipston School before heading back to Lapland to deliver some special information.  He will be speaking to each and every child, giving out enchantment reindeer food, magic landing strip dust and briefing the children on what to do so as not to miss anyone on The Big Night, apparently the Elf of Safety has been really on at him to do more and he knows he needs to tackle the issue at grass roots with the children as some grown ups as we know don’t believe.

Is he going to be back next year for some more R&R, ‘yes I am’ he replies ‘but this time I’m renting Skylark Lodge so I can bring my huskies Hairy and Very with me. I think they will love playing with the resident dogs here, Bear and Huck'.

That sounds like a very good plan to me!

Award Winning UK Campsite

Recognised for 'Style, Luxury and INNOVATION'. Brook Meadow wins Best Self Catering.

Picture
Brook Meadow made its awards debut last night and scooped the coveted category “Most Enjoyable Stay -  Self Catering” Award at the Go Leicester Tourism Awards event held at the Athena on 29th November.

Brook Meadow offers three design focused lakeside Lodges and gorgeous safari themed glamping on a campsite set in a working farm in the countryside near the village of Sibbertoft. A successful farm diversification that prides itself on quality and design with a high level of service and energy-efficient principles.

Over the past year Brook Meadow has been reinvented and rejuvenated, also recently winning, 'Retreat of the Year 2018' with Living in the Shires Magazine. The site is child and dog friendly with one lodge accepting pets. Judges at the Go Leicester Awards were looking for luxury and innovative design and thought Brook Meadow had achieved this with design flair and attention to detail.

Commenting on their awards success, Jasper and Mary Hart, owners of Brook Meadow said: “We started out focused entirely on farming but spotted an opportunity to diversify after dipping our toe into hospitality through a simple bed and breakfast in our bungalow.  Plans quickly grew to building a lake to create a stunning backdrop for lodges, fishermen and campers to enjoy. Over the last 20 years the business has grown with vigour and our invaluable input from our daughter Claire over the last year has transformed the standards of our accommodation and the quality of experience offered. The lakeside lodges offer all the benefits of being close to water with the comforts of central heating, luxurious quality and unique botanical design so fitting for the idyllic setting to bring the outside in. Whether you are outside enjoying a walk round the lake or tucked up on the sofa with a book you’ll feel connected to nature and the stunning view.

To have our success acknowledged by these awards is testament to all our staff, their hard work and support to bring the vision home. We also love to promote other rural businesses too and hope our guests can enjoy the exciting activities and places to eat close by.  It’s obviously a great honour to be named “Most Enjoyable Stay -  Self Catering” at this year’s ceremony and we can’t wait to continue improving our facilities in the future
”.

Picture
In 2019 Brook Meadow intends to implement a landscaping scheme with secluded camping zones, meadow flowers to encourage bees and a children’s natural play area which will reduce the campsite capacity and improve visitor experience.

Please do share your comments on your experience staying with Brook Meadow and send us any feedback on what you would like to see at the campsite.

Top 10 Reasons To Take a Caravan Holiday In The Winter

Read Now

Caravan holiday in the winter? Definitely!
Here's Our Reasons Why

Initially you would think a caravan holiday in the colder seasons would just be wet and miserable but we encourage you to think again. There are many benefits to having a low season holiday from the price to the peacefulness, which brings us to our first reason.
Picture
1. It's quiet
Turning up to a campsite and finding a space is difficult is always a bad start to a holiday. Out of season the children have gone back to school and taken the excitable noise with them. Caravan parks are an amazing opportunity for families to get away in the school holidays at an affordable price but when you're looking for peace and tranquillity, low season caravan holidays will be your chosen time! You'll notice the age range increases along with the top quality motor homes and fully decked out awnings.

2. Ideal for the artists
If you're an avid photographer or keen painter it is perfect to set yourself a new scene and a new challenge. Frosty mornings, dewy fields and icy ponds give you an opportunity to test your skills and work in lower light atmospheres. Portraying the cold, wintry ambience can be difficult but incredibly powerful in a final piece.
3. It's cosy
You would think a caravan is cold but they have amazing insulation properties and radiators! If you haven't taken your caravan for a spin in winter then make this year the year you do. You'll be amazed at how homely and warm it is with Christmas films on, mulled wine on the stove and a frosty winter view from your window.
4. Great winter walks
It's a great time to dig out the hiking boots and cosy coat and go out on a huge hike with a traditional pub at the end. Doing a large walk is not appealing in the heat of the summer sun so book a hiking caravan trip in the low season. Great views, lots of fresh air and exercise is all good for the mind, body and soul. Then a pint in a pub to reward yourself.
Picture
5. Good excuse to spend evenings in the pub
Speaking of the pub, who doesn't love a cosy traditional pub with wooden beams, cosy arm chairs and a log fire. Getting in to a warm welcoming pub after a brisk hike is the best feeling. Indulge in mulled wine or a hot chocolate to warm your hands through and then you won't feel like leaving.

6. Perfect romantic break
It's perfect to focus on just you two. Caravan holidays can be a very raw experience where you can escape from the 9 - 5 rat race. All these little things make for a memorable experience and after a blustery day out walking there is nothing better than getting tucked up in bed with the TV on and a cuddle in your pyjamas.
7. More wildlife
With less guests being on site there are less threats to the local wildlife. You'll be sure to see more of the local friends enjoying their natural habitat. Winter is a great time to see different types of birds due to migration so ideal for any wildlife photographers. Take bird food, nuts and seeds to feed them. Winters are always tough on animals if they don't have enough food stocks.
Picture
8. It's an experience
It won't all be singing and dancing in the rain, you will have to go prepared. Welly boots and rain macs for the bad weather. Ear plugs for the rain at night. Well timed water tank fill-ups and storm-straps for the awning. If you're an outdoorsy, brave and adventurous person you will gain a lot from a winter caravan holiday; living to the full during the days and treasuring every cosy warm cup of tea in the evenings.

9. Experience Christmas in a quaint village
Christmas is such a beautiful time of year with quintessential British villages lighting up with Christmas trees and fairy light window displays. Pubs serving Sunday lunches, carol singers in the square and warm mince pies from the brave cafe opening up in low-season.

Here at Brook Meadow our local villages, Welford and Sibbertoft, hold traditional craft fairs at stately homes, see our Christmas blog here for more information.
10. Like-minded neighbours.
If you have neighbours when you turn up to your chosen caravan site, neither of you are there with your flip flops and sun hats. You're both like-minded gritty true campers. You both know patience from boiling a kettle on the stove and have learnt to ration from a tiny fridge. You both are geared up to change gas in the pouring rain and have a tool box brimming with emergency supplies. And when times get tough, without any previous communication, you know they will be willing to help a fellow camper out as you would to them.
Our campsite, Brook Meadow, is open all year for the adventurous campers and we warmly welcome you with fantastic facilities. We have hard standing pitches, modern toilets and showers on site, accessible wet room, wash up facilities, onsite shop, fishing lodge with additional washrooms, utility area inc: washing machine, ironing equipment and power socket to blow up your air beds, fire pits available for rental, drinking water taps, elsen point and plenty of space.

Winter Walks on the Doorstep of Brook Meadow

Things to do in Sibbertoft and welford from brook meadow

Our closest villages to Brook Meadow are Sibbertoft and Welford both with lovely local country walks, perfect to add in to your Winter Lodge Holiday. As Christmas is creeping up on us quickly we are prematurely putting on our hats, scarves and gloves gearing up for the crisp country walks close to Brook Meadow.

Bring a flask and fill it with some home made mulled wine, grab some mince pies and embark on some of our local walks.
The Jurassic Way is an 88 mile walk following the band of Jurassic Limestone that runs along the northern boundary of Northamptonshire. Of course, with an 88 mile walk you will need a few more flasks of mulled wine so we would recommend joining the walk in Sibbertoft one mile from Brook Meadow where you can do a loop around Welford and Sulby Reservoir. From the Sulby Reservoir head to the Wharf Inn for a pub lunch and a pint. Ask our office staff for more information on the Jurassic Way walk.
Picture
This beautiful view point, Hothorpe Hill, is from the top of a local walk. If you're an early riser then head up just before sunrise for dewy, white fields for as far as you can see. Close by is Hothorpe Hall where you could top off for an afternoon tea or a glass of champagne. It is around a 1 hour walk from Brook Meadow up to Hothorpe Hill.
Don't forget to check out our Christmas Guide if you're visiting Brook Meadow over the festive season. If you haven't booked yet but would like to do some winter walking here in Northamptonshire then check out our last minute availability in our beautiful lakeside lodges!

    special visitors

    Picture

Whilst our latest fine-feathered visitors may have escaped from a domestic environment to holiday at Brook Meadow, it is possible they have migrated here....they are one of the highest-flying birds in the world; the Bar-headed Goose flies above the Himalayan Mountains when it migrates, at heights that may reach 30,000 feet.

We hope our new guests enjoy their stay with us.
